She lent her voice to the title track of Shah Rukh-Deepika starrer Chennai Express. And now she is all set to make her mark in Tollywood too.
Jonita Gandhi’s name might not ring a bell instantly but the Chennai Express title track crooner is already going places — bagging one project after another. Last heard, she has given voice to a Bengali track — E mon ajkal — in the Srabanti and Hiraan-starrer Majnu.

Ask her how easy or difficult it was to sing in Bengali and she says, “The vowels in Bengali are so unlike Hindi or English. I had to write it in my own way to pronounce it right.”
She also recorded a peppy number for a Malayalam film, recently. While this Indo-Canadian singer is thrilled to have sung her very first song for an SRK movie, that too with SP Balasubrahmanyam, she is excited about singing in regional languages. “I love singing in different languages. It’s fun singing for regional films.”
Though hugely influenced by Beyonce, Jonita is an AR Rahman fan and would love to be the voice for Parineeti Chopra, among other actresses.
The singer is open to acting offers but, as of now, she is concentrating only on music. And when not singing for movies, she loves doing live acts. The person responsible for introducing her to the Indian audiences, Sonu Nigam, has ensured that she travels across the country doing concerts, but Jonita is yet to visit Kolkata. “I hope they call me very soon,” she laughs.
